Yes, this is all supposition and totally anecdotal evidence.  Dr Mackool's own idea was that the retina is an oxygen rich environment and the thin layer does offer protection.  I never heard it directly from him, but I also read that he also tries to keep his instruments away from the lens during his procedure, too.  Of course cumulative UV radiation damage from the sun is likely the main culprit when it comes to cataracts in older adults.
