I haven't gotten an infection and I am ten days post op. I had the house cleaned, went back over the sinks and counters with bleach spray the night before surgery, and put clean sheets and pillowcases on the bed. I took a shower with Hibiclens the night before and the day of surgery, making sure to avoid my face and eyes. I washed my hair and face with my regular soap and shampoo. I also put rolls of paper towels by all the sinks so I didn't use regular towels to dry my hands. I washed my hands frequently and had my kids doing it too, especially my son since he had a cold. I rested, rested, rested and I am still resting.
I pretty much kept out of the gym and stores when I could just to stay away from germs as much as possible pre op. I went off Restasis because it is an immunomodulator even though my surgeon didn't think I needed to. I did go to a lab and had a nasal swab to test for MRSA, but they didn't do skin tests, so I couldn't have that done.
I didn't have any prophylactic antibiotics because my surgeon doesn't believe in them. He is more a believer in using sterile technique in the operating room. He cleaned the eye with povidone iodine solution and trimmed my eyelashes to get them out of the surgical field. I was not on warfarin or anything that would've caused my bleeding. But I do believe that the surgeon was very aggressive about getting as much vitreous as possible out. That may have caused the bleeding. He did not use subconjunctival antibiotics, but I think he may have used an antibiotic ointment post op. I used a combo antibiotic/steroid drop for a week after surgery. I also continued to shower with Hibiclens until today.
I think that's about it Fishmoon. Let me know if you need anything else.
