Perhaps I am more precautious about MRSA for three reasons. My grandmother lost her eye to an infection after cateract surgery, my daughter had a MRSA infection on her leg that needed to be lanced and drained by a surgeon, and a good friend of mine from college was hospitalized for a week fighting a MRSA infection. If you have it, you can get rid of it presurgery. MRSA is about the only organism that can't be successfullJy killed off once it gets into your eye. But as one surgeon I visited said, getting an infection is like winning the lottery. Maybe MRSA is more prevalent in my area, but it is a now community problem that isn't getting any better, and it is likely due to overuse of antibiotics. It' a good reason not to use antibiotics unless absolutely necessary or in a precautionary situation like after surgery.
