floaters form Lasik | #3 | ||

I too am suffering from horrible floaters after lasik. Dealing with the big one in my left eye....flinging it out of the way...is a huge distraction in my life...I hate it and can't go for an hour in life without thinking about it.

LASIK does cause floaters | #5
|
Refractive surgeons are well aware that the suction used to slice through the eye to create the lasik flap does cause retinal detachment and from the rd, floaters. Since floaters do occur in the population with normal eyes, refractive surgeons do not consider floaters to be a problem, even though most patients can no longer enjoy clear vision.
If you have lasik and get an uncorrected visual accuity of 20/40 or better you are a success. Floaters, irregular astigmatism resulting in multiple vision from each eye, dry eyes, inability to see clearly indoors even with glasses, inability to function at night are not considered to be either side effects or complications. The only question is whether you are less dependent upon glasses or contact lenses? If you answer "yes" you are a lasik success. |

Eye floaters after lasik | #7
|
Hi! I also wanted to include myself in here to let people know that floaters are not something that you get use to after lasik. I have numerous floaters in both eyes and have 2 in my left eye. I hate it! It's made my life miserable. Thank god for " Jules Stein Institute". I hope you guys put all your heart into this project, and find a solution for many people like myself.
Thanks, LIZ |

Well, I have a little bit of legal experience, and I'd say don't hold your breath folks. I've started experiencing a few annoying floaters after Lasik, and I'm not thrilled about it. But, remember all of those forms you filled out and signed? Mine said, and I'm sure yours did too, that the full effects of Lasik aren't known, and that you agree, in plain english, that you won't sue anyone for side effects. From what I know about tort law, you assumed the risk of these. I don't mean to be down about it, but that's the truth. I doubt you'd find a lawyer to take a case over floaters, and I doubt you'd find a jury that would award you anything, but if you can, more power to you. Think about how you saw before you had Lasik, and how you see now, without glasses or contacts, and with floaters. I'd do it over even knowing what I know now. Maybe that's just me. And, no, I'm not an eye surgeon.

Lasik | #9 | ||

Well Joe, there are lawfirms out there (I know of at least one in a large metropolis) that specialize in bringing lawsuits related to LASIK, for a variety of reasons. But, on your behalf, a LASIK candidate suing because of floaters has no chance whatsoever, on the allegation that lasik caused floaters.....no experts would testify as such.

Hello | #10 | ||

I didn't mean to imply you can't sue over complications related to lasik (although disclosures make assumption of risk issues very difficult). Like I said, if you can find a lawyer who will take the case, more power to you. But remember what they teach you in first year law school: the question isn't can you sue, the question is can you win. Thanks for the comments.

Re: Hello | #11 | ||

I had undergone LASIK 3 yrs. ago and suddenly one day I had watering through my left eye. The doctor diagnosed slight retinal tear that needs to be corrected. Though second opinion said that if there are no floaters or flashes or a shadowy curtain in the field of vision, then there is nothin wrong. Now I get these floaters which the doctors say are normal. From what a normal person can understand from medical jargon is that lots of floaters indicate a retinal tear and now to plug this retinal tear another laser surgery is required though this surgery is not as big as LASIK.
Life is hell with these floaters. If any one had these floaters, do I expect them to reduce with time or should I go for another surgery to correct them. Currently I am on eye drops and simple vitamin pills. |

The thing is that you are not likely having much difficulty since if you were you would say that you would do it again. I Hindsight are thought and dissision are often better. If you are happy about your proceedure I am glad for you. However I see floaters and have all the great problemes that came with it including loss of vision. I would not even go through it again even if I gain floaters. The Key to a successful suit is not the fact that you were informed but that you were not? That is to say, most of us had floaters before the surgery but we were not told that it would be made worse. We were not told the truth about Lasik and all the complications. In that you even admit that you have problems but would still advise people to do it or sorry you would do it again. Last point I want to make is to review surgicaleyes.org and keep your fingers cross because problems can arise later on in life and as for an enhancement people have been damaged years after having a succesful surgery. The benefits are they worth the risk? For me the answer is no. However I did have a bad out come and would wish this on any one the answer is never with the exception of the person how did it to me. Now can you guess howmany laser surgeons have done it do them selves? answer is 85% have glasses and wear contacts them selves. I have a case and it is because 1:I was misinformed 2:Negliance3: two counts of negliance.I 'am not going to explain everthing he did wrong but I can say honestly to you that make sure that it is worth it because once you lose you sight it is not coming back and it is how we see the world?

lasik and floaters | #14 | ||
|
I never thought that my floaters were due to the lasik surgery that was done in my right eye. When I first started to get floaters, I read what I could online, and I found out that it's just something else that happens to people's eyes, like becoming near sighted, and there's nothing anyone can do about it (except let someone zap you with a laser and pray to God).
Well, now I'm very curious indeed. I had LASIK done in my right eye, but PRK in my left eye, and don't have any floaters to speak of in my left eye. However, there may be some there, and it could be a coincidence, but in my right (LASIK) eye there is one nasty floater, not all that big, but in my field of vision at least 90% of the time, and it's always bothered me whenever I tried to read anything, or even just to go for a walk. It's there, causing eye strain, because I reflexively strain my eye to make it go away, which it only does a small fraction of the time anyway, but this is an involuntary reflex unfortunately. God dammit, I can't just stop and ignore it. I've tried. I'm still trying. I try every day, and yes, I'm -slightly- better at ignoring it now than I was a year and a half ago when it appeared. My job performance has definitely suffered as a result. I had a not too spectacular job doing data entry, but I was pretty good at it, and then after the new floater showed up, both my speed and error rate became among the worst of all employees. It was embarrassing, but I didn't dare to reveal to my boss that it was due to this new floater, and that it was something that was never going to be fixed. I would never ever consider getting laser surgery done if I were to do it over. Then again, I still need glasses for everything, just like before. I'm amazed that there are leading sports figures like Tiger Woods that have had it done without getting results like mine. They must get some sort of VIP treatment that I was not privy to. I'm using an eye patch to cover my right eye as I write this; it's the only way I've found to give myself any relief. But it's also completely unnatural to see with one eye like this, and gives me a different kind of headache. Maybe if I give it a lot of time? Has anyone with floaters in one eye used an eye patch to fix the problem? Now I'm wondering about seeking -more- laser treatment to fix what happened the first time (for the floaters). Ugh. I still wear glasses. In fact, they're basically the same prescription that I had before the laser procedure. Presumably, that would imply that had I not had the procedure, my glasses would be twice as thick as they are now? Maybe. Thankyou TLC! |

eye patches | #15 | ||

I also wear an eye patch to get some relief. Although I got floaters in both eyes (no lasik related), but the right eye does not bother me as much as the left eye does, so sometimes that's the only possibility I find to work.

I got floaters 1.5 months after surgery | #16
|
My vision now is good after surgery with some ghosting in my right eye but overall it's good. However, I am beginning to see more and more floaters in my left eye 1.5 months after surgery and they are getting more and more distracting. My eyes also get tired really fast and I feel like they are being strained all the time. I wish I had not done Lasik as I had perfect vision with contacts and no major problems with them. I feel really awful and stupid! I only hope that this improves over time

Hi Ghoste,
I also had lasik done, but I had mines done about 5 years ago. I started seeing floaters about 3 months ago. I don't know if my floaters are lasik related. It might have precipated it though. If you want you can e-mail me. I'd be glad to talk to you. Tina tchau999@yahoo.com |

it is really a misfortune this that happens, here in my country this damned operation has become the business but lucrative for these ofthalmologist of the hell, I have seen as they damage great quantity of young, they don't warn them of this terrible risk, the truth is that if they made him this to my relative, I could become criminal. Apart from this I tell them neither they are happened to attempt the laser to solve this problem, since it doesn't serve, here in my country we have attempted it experimentally without result, but promising the vitrectomy TCV25 B&L, or the enzymatic treatment Vitrase.

you can have floaters removed by vitrectomy its called fov
floater only vitrectomy, i have had it done my result is 99% better. i had some the size of a silver dollar and they swirled around it can drive you insane. threads dots clouds cotton balls fish eggs etc all shapes and forms it really sucks Dr Stallmans in Belgium is willing to do this kind of surgery and Dr Mackool in New York does it too but it is very pricey, fov is the same thing as vitrectomy but for the sole purpose of removing floaters so most doctors dont think the risk is worth getting rid of floaters but its ignorance on their part. most docs do 3 or 4 of them evey week but for other reasons like working within the eye.anytime they have to do anything within the eye they first havre to remove the vitreous and that is what is done to remove flaoters. so fov is a very straight forward precedure ic_waz_up@yahoo.com if you wanna ask more questions |
