Posts: 138 26-Oct-2007 12:28:01	Hi all, over the years you've all provided excellent and valuable information for eye-floaters.com which has helped create a website that can be of use to people (as opposed to being yet another website about the same thing). I have some free time this weekend and and want to use this time to make some changes to the website. But, I'm not sure what to change? I'll do a content audit to ensure it's up to date but other than that, I'm at a loss! Have thought about writing about surgeons, doing an interview with them, but no one ever came back to me on that. Are there any suggestions you would like to see in terms of content, features, layout or functions? the website is www.eye-floaters.com Thank you.

Posts: 17 26-Oct-2007 13:47:51	This is an excellent website and I find it very useful. What I would find useful is some more info in relation to YAG laser surgery for floaters. Specifically an illustration of what type of floaters this treatment is suitable for and what type it is not. I myself had a PVD with floaters (stringy lines, dots cobwebs) shortly after LASIk treatment. I have been told that my type of floater post PVD are treatable by this method but then sometimes I read that it's only the large blob type of floater which can be treated so mixed messages. My floaters are extremely annoying rather than sight obstructing but would still like to get them zapped.

You have put in a lot! of work and its full of great stuff and the design is great. I hope Im not too late, but I have quite a few ideas. I think there are three audiences for this site: 1. The sufferers wanting info. 2. The opthamologists who need to be educated about how we feel and given clear ways to contribute to the site. 3. Other bodies we might need to lobby or who might be in a position to influeven things. I think this site is a great opportunity to galvanise us all into some action. You want to encourage people to keep coming back with regularly updated info. And you want to promote that above the static content. And you want to allow people to get involved. I also think it would be great if we could have it in other languages (there are online auto tools which might not be perfect but would be a good start at the least we need to find out what floaters are called in other languages and make sure thats in the keywords for search engines. So here is my idea for a sitemap: HOME PAGE: 1. Upbeat welcome message 2. Nice uplifting picture, rollover it to see what the world looks like for us ie swirly crap. 3. Prominent link to the forum 4. Latest News link to news page 5. PayPal donation link for Charity we really need to get sorted out. 6. Living with floaters link to peoples experiences 7. What are floaters? Short explanation: Prominent link to images of what the world looks like through our eyes Link to page with more technical info about what they are different types Side Navigation: ABOUT FLOATERS: 1. Picture of eye. 2. Explanation of types of floaters 3. Symptoms CAUSES: 1. Explanation of known and suggested causes. TREATMENT: 1. Eye vitamins and herbal treatments, surgical treatments, psychological treatments 2. Options, risks, outcomes. Invite surgeons to write this bit &links to more indepth sites. Might be nice to present this in some kind of comparison table with success rates and risks. RELATED CONDITIONS: 1. Cataracts & IOLs 2. Retinal detachment 3. Pressure SEEING A DOCTOR: 1. Warning about the attitude a lot of them have. 2. Tests. 3. List of questions everyone should ask 4. Link to database or list of treatment-friendly doctors with an online form facility for people to send in other recommendations. 5. From each doctor name, click to open a page on them with: a. A short write-up on them, b. Contact details, c. Prices, d. Treatments they offer e. Link to an interview with them f. Underneith each, allow people to add comments (like on Amazon). People can give feedback, advice, hotels in the area, etc, etc. LATEST NEWS: News, articles, conferences, lectures, etc. RESEARCH: What is going on where into floaters, IOLs, surgical techniques. Keep updated. GET INVOLVED: This is the area I really feel we have to all get organized about. United we stand and divided we fall and all that. Set up a charity and have its details here, details of how to donate. Link to petition. Print out a letter to send to your local Member of Parliament. Annual get together. I think this is important. We could help each other with places to stay in foreign cities and stuff. Contact us with your ideas. HELPFUL LINKS: 1. Posts: 138 5-Nov-2007 10:39:26	Wow, SuzySoo, all are excellent suggestions! The sitemap is much more logical than mine, even at initial glance one can see it flows on nicely from each topic. I've seen some of your other posts here, I love the fact you're, and still remain, proactive. For this particular change, a redesign will be necessary, methinks. My menu bar on the left is limited in size somewhat and doesn't really support any more sub menus, so that will require some thought. Meantime, some of the content can be worked on right away so will get researching. How involved would you like to be? Yes I'm very happy to get involved with the site and would like to. Although, unfortunately I am incredibly busy at the mo with 2 jobs and a degree, so I may not be able to devote as much time to it as I would like, but I will certainly do what I can. I think it would be a very good idea if we could get some volunteers who'd be prepared to take a section of the site each to research and/or write up. I think it's important to get people involved. If you thought that was a good idea, I reckon you should post up a message in each section asking for a some people. Just to let you know, I contacted Moorfields yesterday to ask what their research dept is involved in and whether they'd be prepared to talk to us. I thought I could take Miche along if they agreed and she wanted as we're both in London.

I don't need volunteers for coding, I can write up PHP scripts in a minute or two! I think I'll need a hand on the actual sections, I'll start thinking about a redesign but won't make it a priority, I think getting the content up there first and foremost and then changing the layout as I need to would be better suited.

Posts: 138 8-Nov-2007 16:15:42	Hey SuzySoo, your approach is well thought out! Are you a project manager? I would love as much involvement as anyone can care to give! Splitting up the content seems the right approach. No one needs to write HTML or format articles, I can do that before putting online. I'll create a demo v2 page that we can use for inspiration. Please note though that I can often be away from the PC for days at a time, work is incredibly busy at the moment so it's often hard to get some free time. I'll endeavour to try and ensure I use any free time for this new site however. Requirements in terms of content is that it's consistent and is easy to read. I don't like how, for example, www.eye-floaters.com/floa...oaters.php is laid out. So anyway, please do be as proactive as you feel!

For me, I would like to write the new design template, get all the CSS and server side finalised and then morph the existing site to this new (excellent) site map that Suzy has proposed. Then, we can review what's left and start working on those individual sections. For now, I'll move my own community forum to point to this one. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.

I'm a 23 y/o reporter from Long Beach, CA, and I have experience in writing, public relations and fundraising. I'm interested in writing volunteer articles and helping organize this outreach; I also suffer from floaters and I realize how badly a cure is needed. Thanks for all of your efforts!
