I'm 5 months post-FOV and pretty unhappy with the results. I still have occasional inflammation cells in my vision which is incredibly annoying. I'm still hopeful that they will go away. But, that's worse is my frill. I hate it. I'm going to see a different surgeon in a couple of months. I'm sure he is going to tell me that he cannot get at the vitreous I see in my periphery without risk of damaging my lens. So, that will leave me with the hard decision of whether I should go for a combined lensectomy and vitrectomy to finally get past this.
Seems extreme? Well, I'm not taking the decision lightly. I visited my optometrist and asked him if I could “simulate” what it would be like to have monofocal IOLs. He prescribed me dilation drops which causes loss of accommodation. He then did an eye test and determined progressive glasses I would need. Of course cataract surgery has risks, but, I’m more concerned about how I’ll see after giving up my natural lenses (which have no sign of cataracts). I pick up my glasses next week.
Why would I consider this? Here is why:
1) I hate floaters, and, to me, the frill is just as bad
2) I signed up for early cataracts when I went down the path of FOV
3) I feel the leftover vitreous in my anterior is a time bomb:
a) It’ll continue to deteriorate and potentially cause floaters in the future
b) Cataract surgery can cause new floaters due to the high frequency tool used for lens removal
4) Drugs like Ocriplasmin are too new and potential side-effects are too severe when considering it for this off-label use
I’m sure people will say I’m crazy for even thinking this. Nothing is guaranteed. I could go through with this and still have floaters. I could visual anomalies from the IOL. Things could go horribly wrong.
But, lets assume everything does go well. Question is, what will I lose when my natural lens is gone? I’m going to find out.
